Research/ Reference: Some crazy animations and some interesting ones.

This one is crazy and pretty funny. I think it's really well made and I love the mixture of different styled animations in the one animation/ short but they are all connected in some way. It's really clever!

This animation really reminds me of what I studied in my Surrealism Seminar classes!

Found this one. It's really cute and well made:

Creative Writing Workshop Individual and Group Stories!

Today we had a Creative Writing Workshop on how to go about writing fun and crazy stories/ narrative. We also watched a few short animations on the website 'Shorts of the Week'.

Individual Exercise
We were then given the exercise of writing a story of our own. I was assigned three words:
An annoying boss, Chopsticks and fake an illness.
To be honest I was brain dead for the exercise and wasn't happy with any of my short stories. The most random one I came up with was this:

Main Characters:
  • Annoying boss named Anne. Bit bonkers and in your face. Very energetic and loud. In charge of a chopstick making factory. Always bossing around her poor workers.
  • Worker George. Bit lazy, ordinary guy but gets his work done. Always being picked on by the boss. Maybe she fancies him? Or maybe she just likes picking on people! Standing up to this woman is a bad idea.

Plot: Anne is bored in her office and decides to wander around the work place to bug her workers. One particular worker catches her eye because he's a bit more lazy than the others. She marches over and sarcastically starts giving out to him. After a while the worker grows irritated from the constant scolding and pokes Anne in the shoulder with a chopstick telling her to "shut up!". Obviously Anne interprets this as a challenge and graps a chopstick of her own and takes a fencing/ sword fighting stance and attacks the worker (George). They part take in a dramatic fencing match in the middle of the work area.
Anne then builds a proper length sword out of chopsticks with ridiculous speed. In shock George frantically does the same but builds a big axe. The battle dramatically continues and these two continuously building ridiculous weapons ranging from swords, axes, spears, bow and arrow, guns, tanks to transformer type suits. Fight scenes are overly dramatic and humerous and sometimes in a comic book like style.
Anne grows impatient and dramatically fakes to be wounded, collapsing on the ground. The worried George stops to help but she deals a lethal attack and sends him flying. She brushes herself off, chopsticks scattered everywhere and with no remorse laughs in Georges face and walks off telling him to clean up the mess. George sits on the ground with a twitch in his eye out of annoyance.
.....annoying boss!

Group Exercise
We were then put into groups of three to do the same exercise. This time combining the three stories of each person together into one crazy story. Here is what we came up with:

Main Characters:
  • Taxi man, Brian: Gloomy looking taxi driver who's always being scolded by his annoying boss. Always fed up looking. Must hate his job!
  • Boss, Mr.Smith: Bossy, annoying boss that everyone hates. Always shouting at his employees. In charge of the Taxi company.
  • Lady, Sarah: File Unknown?!!

Plot: Begins with poor Brian clearly irritated looking  in his taxi waiting to collect people as he notices something outside the taxi which triggers him to remember certain events. Then changes scene to a flash back. Brian is waiting to collect people as usual and a woman gets into the back of the taxi. A spark develops between them as they talk and laugh together. As days pass this lady continues being collected by George in the same area to take her to the same destination and the spark between them grows. Then suddenly George stops seeing Sarah and she ends contact with him. George tries calling her but with no reply. Heart broken, George gives up and returns to his gloomy self. Time passes. One day when he's cleaning his taxi and comes across Sarah's number on crumpled piece of paper on the floor. In the Taxi Company workers area outside the bosses office. Brain  decides to call Sarah one more time. He hears a ringtone that he recognises as Sarah's ringtone and automatically follows it's direction. It leads him to the bosses office. He peaks inside to see the boss about to answer the phone... while putting on his lipstick!!!!!!! George's face reacts with shock and disgust.
......Poor George!

This is the Poster and Title I came up with for the above weird story

RE-EDIT OF GROUP STORY!!!!!
Our tutor didn't really like our story, said it was a bit strange and random. He liked the beginning but not the end. So we changed it, we were then told it was a bit boring!! But I think thats ok, we can liven up the story ourselves when animating it our own way. We looked at our words again and changed the story. The words we chose to work with were:

  •  Annoying boss
  • Taxi
  • Valentines Day
  • missing tooth

Plot: Begins with poor Brian the taxi driver being shouted at by his horrible boss. Brian leaves to go on his rounds as a taxi driver still gloomy looking. He stops at a certain place on the street and a woman gets into the taxi. As he's taking her to her destination the two of them chat and start getting along. As days go by, Brian continues collecting his woman in the same area and become close. Brian begins falling for her. Valentines day arrives and Brian perks up the courage to ask this woman on a date. He goes to collect her as usual, but to Brian's dismay, she gets in with her boyfriend!!! Brian is heartbroken and reverts back to his original gloomy state. Back at the taxi office Brian is being scolded by his boss once again. Finally Brian snaps and punches his boss in the face and knocks out his tooth.
Next thing you see Brian leaving the front door of the taxi office with his box of belongings in his hands. (Obviously was fired, but does he mind?) Brian then gets into a taxi to find it's a woman driver and they drive off.
……How romantic!!!!
Wasn't our first intention for it to be a soppy story but it turned out to be! I don't mind though because I love cute things haha! Hopefully I can do this story justice when animating it. I don't know if I'll change it too much! We'll see!

Finished Christmas Card animation!!!

My festive Christmas Card animation is complete! I managed to finish a day before the deadline, for once I wasn't in a mad rush to finish on the day of the deadline. It's quite relaxing! But, it was my intention to finish a day early so I could have a day to edit or tidy up the animation, so I'm happy I kept to my schedule!

I cleaned up some particularly scribbley lines and made some minor changes that my tutor suggested. One of the suggestions was to give more colour to the Elf. I tried various ways of doing that but felt the colour was too distracting. My animation is supposed to only have a little bit of colour to draw in the eye of the viewer not focus the eye on one point completely. My animation is essentially only a line drawing. It's simple and effective which is one of the traits I like most about it.

It was fun making this animation! I tried making it amusing for the viewer to enjoy and judging by the giggles and smiles of my fello classmates who watched it, hopefully I succeeded! What's the point of a Christmas card if it doesn't make you smile?

So here it is!
Enjoy!

Christmas Card Storyboard

view of santa reading one of his letters which says Lucy wants a cat for Christmas.

View of Elf walking towards assembly line with cat in hand and then places the cat on the assembly line.

Elf tries putting a festive bow on the cat but the cat refuses and struggles. Eventually the Elf succeeds.

Elf then picks up the cat to place it in the box but again the cat refuses.

Elf struggles to push the cat into the box till finally the cat loses his grip and falls in. Elf immediately puts lid on the box.

Elf is relieved and takes a break as the box moves along the assembly line offscreen.

There is a sudden crash sound coming from the left which blows the surprised Elf to one side.

Elf reacts with dismay about the destruction that occurred offscreen. Cat casually walks back on screen.

Elf buries his head in his hands and sighs. Cat looks at screen and meows. Merry Christmas appears at top of screen.

Christmas Brief Idea 2. Grinch and Swat Elves.

This idea involves the typical Grinch trying to spoil a families Christmas but there is a task force ready and waiting to stop him.

Research

Netgun

Storyboard

1.zoomed in on house window of family around their Christmas tree.
2. zoom out the window to the outside to the front garden.
3. the Grinch sneaks up to the house in the garden looking evil and mischievous.
4. before the Grinch can spoil the families ChrisTmas, a swat team jumps out of different places in the garden who where lying in wait.
5. they shoot the Grinch with a gun that shoots out a net and captures him.
6. they casually carry the Grinch away, job well done!

Think I'll go for this idea!

Christmas Brief Idea 1 Cat Present. Decided!

Hmm the basics of this idea is following what a child asks for christmas through the toy factory. In this case someone asks for a cat because it's typical to ask for a puppy and I didn't want to go for the usual stuff. I also thought a cat would be more amusing because they're a bit more stubborn and disobedient than dogs.

I love Simon's cat!!! It's really funny and expressive and what I love most is how simple it is and the quality of drawing!

Quick Draft Storyboard of idea
1. View a letter to santa asking for a kitty.
2. Santa gives the signal and an Elf fetches kitty in the 'Christmas Kitty Kennel'.
3. Kitty is scooped up and prepared for shipping off, grooming, red bow and bell on it's next etc. Kitty resists a bit.
4. All clean and pristine Elf tries placing cat into the box up it resists again. Eventually gets in the box.
5.  Moves along on the assembly line belt till it gets to the slay.
6. Finally freed on Christmas morning bit worn out.
.....or something like that!

Concept behind my idea
I remember as I child I always asked for some kind of pet for Christmas because I have always loved animals. It's typical imagery to see children asking for puppies for Christmas and the child opens a box to find a puppy with a bow around it's neck etc.
Then I started thinking about what would that actually involve? Obviously the parents just go to the pet store, but thats boring! what I mean is, what would it involve for Santa and his Elves? I say it would be difficult for those little elves to handle a cranky cat or animals, only one of their daily troubles I imagine! So I wanted to animate an amusing struggle for the poor Elf as he tries preparing the cat as a gift. Cats being one of the most stubborn animals I know of, his task will not be easy!

I've decided to the animation in simple line drawings, no colour! Unusual for a Christmas animation but I like the simplicity of it. I'm using 'Simons Cat' animations as my main reference. Perhaps I will add small pieces of colour in vital areas of the animation to draw in the viewers eye e.g. 'Merry Christmas' title at the end.

My tutors said to develop my own style. So in this animation I have my own style of drawing with my usual scribbly lines and with an anime influence. It's simple which is something I love doing…I don't like complicated stuff, not because I'm lazy or anything, I'll make it complicated if I have to… I just prefer the simplicity and effectiveness of some animations and I want to imitate that in my own way. I wanted to draw in a sketchy manner but I know thats difficult to achieve in Flash because its vector based and corrects the strokes into clean precise ones. I'll still draw away like I usually do and see what happens.
